Bring Us Together

I have a confession to make: The Bible is one of my favorite books. I don't think of my self as a Christian but I do love the stories in the Bible and more importantly the messages ring true for me.

A good friend of mine and I were talking about the Bible the other day and he said, "when people use a book to invalidate my life, I choose to push that book away."  I can completely empathy with my friend in this case, knowing his life's history, but I didn't give it much more thought at the time.

Upon reflection now I realize that it makes me sad. For me the Bible is a way to connect with others and bring people together, and I can't imagine using it to push anyone away. Although sometimes just mentioning it can push people away.

I have used lots of things in my life to push others away through my actions. Soccer, Books, Alcohol, Attitude, Image, etc. I was never actively thinking "I'm going to push this person away" but my actions could be interpreted the same, and I definitely wasn't bringing us together.

It comes down to our intentions. Not everyone is going to agree on the same issues all the time but if we are using anything in our lives to tell others that they are "Wrong" rather than to gage where we ourselves are being less effective, we have missed the point.

A pattern that I have noticed in my life is that Joy has always come from Connection rather than segregation. I'm going to see where I can be better at this in my life and hopefully I can connect with you.
